Chapter 1 is the first of 8 proposed chapters of a free anesthesia machine workbook disseminated via the Web at http://vam.anest.ufl.edu. Development of Chapter 1 was funded by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation.  The original version (v 1.0) was released in November 2002 in English and contains structured exercises designed for instructional use or self-paced learning about traditional anesthesia machines and is a companion learning aid to the VAM simulation (reverse of this handout). The original version has been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish and is used as part of the curriculum in anesthesia programs worldwide. Hungarian translations are in progress. The workbook has received favorable peer review [2].  Version 1.1 (released in April 2004 in English) addresses suggestions in the A&A review [2] and includes 10 additional scenarios.
