Introduction

Patient safety is the overarching and unifying research focus of the Virtual Anesthesia Machine (VAM) web site.

A new, four-year patient safety curriculum at the UF College of Medicine was started in 2008.  Some of the simulations at the VAM web site are used to teach medical students and residents at UF and outside UF.  Most of the simulations on the VAM web site are free.

Resident Training

The learning audience that can benefit from the simulations on the VAM web site includes:

  • Medical students
  • Nursing students
  • Physician Assistants
  • Clinicians
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Veterinarians
  • Engineering students
Applications (selected simulations; more available):

Alveolar Gas Equation

alveolar gas equation

This interactive model uses dynamic plots to illustrate the alveolar gas equation (AGE) at steady state.

Oxygen Circulation

Oxygen circulation

Simulation of oxygen circulation in the adult body

Blood pressure measurement artifact

Blood pressure measurement artifact

(hydrostatic pressure) - In this interactive simulation, users may learn about how the blood pressure measurement depends on the position of a patient and the location of the blood pressure cuff due to hydrostatic pressure.

Coronary Circulation Model

coronary circulation model

This model of the coronary circulation is integrated with a model of the systemic circulation, and contains models for oxygen supply and demand.
1-Compartment pharmacokinetic model
stochastic
stochastic - This interactive simulation is designed to illustrate the exponential nature of a first order system to learners without background in mathematics or physics.
hydraulic analogue
hydraulic analogue - Based on exact solutions, this deterministic simulation of a single compartment pharmacokinetic model includes a hydraulic analog to facilitate visualization of the response to a bolus injection.
2-Compartment pharmacokinetic model
stochastic
stochastic - This stochastic simulation is mainly for visualization purposes and is similar in design to the first order stochastic visualization.
hydraulic analog
hydraulic analogue - Based on numerical techniques, this deterministic simulation of a two compartment pharmacokinetic model includes a hydraulic analog to facilitate visualization of the response to a bolus injection, infusion and/or oral administration. The drug concentration in both compartments is plotted.

Bag Valve Mask Simulator

Bag valve mask simulator

The bag valve mask simulation demonstrates how a typical self inflating manual resuscitator bag functions and how it can fail.

Rhythm trainer for BVM ventilation

Rhythm trainer for BVM ventilation

This simulation trains users to squeeze the resuscitator bag at the proper breathing frequency for pediatric and adult patients.

Analytical NMR Principles

analytical NMR Principles

A transparent reality simulation of analytical Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).
